Taekwondo Club Etiquette


1.General etiquette

  • Please don’t wear shoes on the mat

  • Bow when leaving or entering the mat during practice

  • Get instructor’s permission before leaving or entering the mat during practice

  • Follow and participate with the instructor’s class

  • Don’t use equipment (i.e. kicking bags) unless permitted by the instructor

  • Train based on the instructor’s class

  • Wear your belt, especially for formal events (belt testing)

  • If you do not have a belt, please speak to an officer/instructor to receive them

  • If you need to adjust your belt, turn away from the instructor


2.Coming into practice

  • Coming to class early

    • Sign in

    • You can stretch

    • You can practice techniques

    • Stop and line up when the instructor starts practice

  • Beginning of practice

    • Line up from highest to lowest belt

    • Line up at the end if you don’t have a belt

    • The highest belt will bow the class in using the phrase “kyo-soemnim ke kyongre” (kyo-sum-nim kay kyoung-nay)

    • Members will bow and greet the instructor using the phrase “annyeong hashimnikka” (ahn-yung ha-shim nee-ka)

  • Coming to class late

    • Wait by the mat until the instructor acknowledges them to come onto the mat


3. Behavior during class

  • Please show the instructor respect by saying “yes ma’am”/”sir” if they prefer it

  • Please ask an instructor before leaving the mat unless there is an emergency, medical emergency, or injury

4. Ending practice

  • Line up in the same order at the beginning of class

  • Members who arrived late must line up in the back regardless of belt rank

  • The highest belt will bow the class in using the phrase “kyo-soemnim ke kyongre” (kyo-sum-nim kay kyoung-nay)

  • Members will bow and greet the instructor using the phrase “kamsahamnida” (kam-sah- ham-nee-dah)


5. Formal Events

  • Dress code/attire will be announced before an event

  • Please wear your belt and dobok during formal events

  • Formal events include belt tests, in-house tournaments, and seminars


6.Cleaning

  • If you borrow equipment from the club (i.e. sparring gear), please clean it using the provided wipes and spray

  • You can earn points if you help clean the room/mats.
